Why men in particular might benefit from surf therapy
Men are three times more likely to die from suicide than women, and less likely to seek professional help for mental health issues. In fact, only 37% of men who experienced a mental disorder in the past 12 months saw a health professional for their mental health, compared with 54.7% of females. One in seven men in Australia will experience depression in their lifetime and one in five will experience anxiety.
At Waves of Wellness, we have found that men in particular benefit from surf-based therapy as opposed to traditional therapy. This is in part due to the unique nature of surf therapy which has the potential to address specific challenges that some men may face. This blog post explores some of those challenges and how surf therapy could help.
1. Physical Engagement: Surf therapy involves physical activity and interaction with the natural environment, which can resonate with men who prefer hands-on, active approaches to coping and healing. Engaging in physical challenges like surfing can help release pent-up energy and provide a sense of achievement.
2. Outlet for Emotions: Some men find it challenging to express emotions verbally in traditional therapy settings. The physicality of surfing and being in the water can serve as an alternative outlet for releasing emotions and reducing stress.
3. Connection with Nature: The calming and grounding effects of being in nature, particularly the ocean, can have a positive impact on mental well-being. The experience of riding waves and connecting with the elements can provide a unique avenue for relaxation and introspection.
4. Community and Camaraderie: Surf therapy often involves group settings, fostering a sense of camaraderie and support among participants. Men who appreciate teamwork, competition, and shared experiences may find it easier to connect with others in this context.
5. Challenge and Mastery: Surfing presents a learning curve and challenges that can help men build confidence, resilience, and a sense of mastery. Overcoming the obstacles of learning to surf can translate to improved self-esteem and a positive mindset.
6. Escape from Routine: For men who may feel constrained by daily routines and responsibilities, surf therapy offers an opportunity to break away from the norm and engage in an adventurous and liberating activity.
7. Mindfulness and Focus: Surfing requires a high level of focus and presence in the moment, which can lead to mindfulness and a temporary escape from intrusive thoughts or worries.
8. Empowerment: Mastering the art of riding waves can instil a sense of empowerment and accomplishment. Men may find satisfaction in conquering physical challenges and pushing their limits.
9. Unique Approach: Surf-based therapy is an unconventional and refreshing approach to healing, which may appeal to men who are seeking something different from traditional talk therapy.
10. Holistic Well-Being: Surf therapy addresses mental, physical, and emotional aspects of well-being in an integrated way. Men who value holistic approaches to health may appreciate the comprehensive benefits that surf therapy offers.
It's important to note that therapy is a personal journey, and what works best for one individual may not work for another. Some men may find traditional therapy to be highly effective, while others may resonate more with alternative approaches like surf therapy. The key is to provide a range of options and support so that individuals can choose the therapeutic approach that aligns with their preferences, needs, and comfort levels. At Waves of Wellness we believe that we are a great value add that can often unlock and open the door for people who have, for whatever reason previously been reluctant to seek traditional help.

Disclaimer: As with any form of therapy or self-care practice, cold water therapy should be approached with caution and used in conjunction with other evidence-based strategies for promoting mental health, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and seeking professional support when needed.
