How to Transform the Shitshow of 2021 into an Epic 2022

By: Maddy Fellmann

I’m sure that we can agree that 2021 has been especially challenging. In fact, the ever-changing, ever-churning shitshow of the last two years and all its uncertainty can be difficult to shake. Heartache, disappointments, tragedy, disaster, losses, burnout, wipeouts, you name it, we’ve faced it.

However, if there’s one thing we’ve learnt as we’ve been pushed to the brink, it is to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. By allowing ourselves to feel all of those emotions we can ultimately look toward the future with an increased sense of optimism and excitement.

So, while we can all agree that the global situation has been a colossal mess and we really don’t know what’s around the corner, we’ve decided to come up with 5 tips to help you bring in a more balanced 2022.

  1. Sit with the feelings of the past year

It can be easy to get caught up in all the difficult emotions of the past year. So, to inspire a better 2022 we recommend allowing yourself to reflect on those emotions and difficulties. Also, reflect on the positive insights the last year has brought! Whether that be a new passion, interest or simply an appreciation for those closest to you. Write them down, as this will help you process and reflect. You may think you’re scraping the barrel on a terrible year, but chances are you’ll be pleasantly surprised with what you can come up with.

  2. Reach out for support

It is so important to recognise when things are getting a bit too difficult. There are a range of support networks you can access, whether that be catching up with those closest to you or seeking professional care. You deserve to welcome the new year feeling supported and grounded.

  3. Change up your routine

Life can definitely feel a bit like Groundhog Day sometimes, especially with all the restrictions we’re dealing with. A great way to start off 2022 feeling refreshed is by changing up or integrating new things into your daily routine. This could be as simple as finding time each day to go for a walk or finally starting to read that book you got last Christmas.

  4. Pick up a new hobby

A great way to welcome a new year is by challenging yourself! Try picking up a new hobby or skill to keep you engaged and having fun. Maybe you’ve always wanted to try surfing? We have people coming to our programs in their seventies - it’s never too late to try something new!

  5. Set goals

A great way to encourage a productive and happy year is by setting goals. Keeping track and actively working toward goals encourages a sense of purpose and direction. This can also include setting goals to allow yourself a chance to practice self-care and take time off to recharge. We’re not talking about fruitless new year resolutions, but practical steps to improve your mental health. This could be as simple as 10 minutes of meditation a day. Everyone has 10 minutes a day, right?

With all these tips in mind, we truly do hope you start the year feeling refreshed and hopeful.
