Good Vibes Happen on the Tides: a Q&A with Sav Nelson
We reached out Xavier Nelson (AKA Sav), a participant of last year’s Melbourne WOW program to give us some insight into his experience and his participation in the Plank Up The Volume challenge this year!
How did you find out about WOW?
I first came across WOW on a Facebook group I’m a member of – Urbnsurfers Melbourne. From that, I looked into the foundation and thought, this sounds awesome! Where do I sign up?
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m currently on parental leave for three months, looking after my 10-month-old son and 3-year-old daughter. Having kids is the hardest and the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.
I work in the civil construction industry as a commercial boat and barge operator. Because of this, I get to spend a fair bit of time on the water. I’ve always liked being around the water, particularly the ocean. That’s what first draw me to surfing. My goals are to simplify my life, spend more time with my family and friends and do the things I enjoy!
Tell us about your experience with the WOW program?
I was a little bit nervous rocking up to the pool on the first day – new people, having to talk in front of a group, being judged. But within 15 minutes of meeting the organisers Carmela and Georgia, I felt at ease! My nerves quickly disappeared as they made it clear that we were in a safe, respectful space, free of judgement.
I’m not the best public speaker and I was reluctant to have my say in the group discussion at first. As the weeks went on however, I felt more comfortable and slowly started to contribute more. Even if my issues weren’t directly resolved, it made me feel better to get it off my chest. From this, I’ve realised that I actually like having discussions. Having other people share made me realise that everyone has something going on, we’re all human, I’m not so different, after all!
The social and physical outlet was great. Having community contact and being part of the group gave me a feeling of belonging and support. Surfing can be a real workout – who ever knew a workout could be fun! Getting the blood pumping and the endorphins improved my mood, self-perception, and sleep.
The main things I took from this program were:
- Support, belonging and fitness from joining a sporting group
- Taking time each day to meditate, switch off
- Finding fun in surfing!
What motivated you to sign up for the Plank Up The Volume Challenge?
I love surfing so the challenge got my attention straight away.
Since struggling with my mental wellbeing from a young age, I’ve been through most standard treatment methods and found they never really worked for me. However, the WOW program suited me perfectly – such a fantastic idea! After completing a 6-week program at no cost, I really wanted to give back to the foundation in some way. That’s why I’ve signed up for the Plank Up The Volume challenge and applied to be a volunteer surf mentor!
What do you think will be the positive effects on your mental health from participating in this challenge?
It feels good to give back and I like feeling good! Completing the challenge will not only be a physical achievement but also a mental achievement. From the program, I’ve learnt to look at my mental health more as ‘mental fitness’. You’ve got to work at it to keep fit. It’s more than just physical, planking is about persevering and telling yourself to push through it – you can do it!
What do you anticipate will be the most challenging and rewarding parts of the challenge for you?
I’ve personally challenged myself to aim for the 9 minutes of planking in one sitting. I’m currently at 5 minutes. Knowing that I’m giving back to the foundation is rewarding. Improving my fitness and even trimming up the belly would be a nice extra too!
What would you say to someone thinking about joining a WOW surf therapy program?
Two people I talked to have now participated in a WOW program and have loved it. I’ve spoken about my experience, the relaxed nature of the program and basically said to just give it a go!
