The WOW Factor: Participant Phoebe Shares Her Story
Phoebe van Bergen 20 (pictured left with surfboard), is studying at the University of Newcastle and works as a bartender and freelance copywriter. She joined our Nobbys Sand n Surf program and our Virtual program in 2021.
How did you first hear about WOW?
Through one of my mates who lives on campus at Uni. The program is really popular for everyone on campus! Plus it’s free which is the cherry on top.
What motivated you to sign up for WOW?
Growing up on top of the beach my whole life, I’ve always been involved with activities on and off the sand, Nippers every Sunday, spending spare afternoons, after school, running, walking the dog, catching up with friends - all at the beach. My circle of friends and my family all know how to surf and for some reason – I was the odd one out.
Then, of course, my personal battle with mental health was also a huge factor to signing up for the program. Having an environment where I could talk freely about my experiences, gain some guidance and advice, all while learning to surf!? I thought bingo! Sign me up!
What surprised you the most about a WOW program?
Two things.
1. How incredibly warm, inviting and supportive the entire group really was. Obviously, you’d think it will be a fun environment, but I really wasn’t prepared for how safe and secure I actually felt. I know that sounds sappy, but it’s the truth!
2. That most of the participants were women! It was empowering seeing all these women out together, in solidarity, learning to surf together, tackling discussions of mental health together, and all doing it with enthusiasm and harmony.
You’ve done a beach and virtual program. What are the benefits for both?
Beach benefits: Obviously, if I’m going to choose a virtual or beach program, it would be the beach. You’re physically out there, learning to surf, early in the morning mid-week, with people actually there, helping you catch waves, demonstrating things, meeting other people, jumping in the water, falling on and off the board. It’s a huge feeling of community when you’re all together, learning and discovering new things.
Virtual Benefits: I did find with the virtual program – if you’re a fiend for knowledge or a good convo like me, then the virtual is actually really stimulating. It still happens early morning mid-week, which gives you something to look forward to, like a check point each week, I guess. Where you can talk about your week, any problems, then also focus more on surf knowledge. I found that through these virtual sessions, it gave me a world of more knowledge and know-how, which has definitely developed me as a surfer.
What did you learn about yourself during a WOW program?
I learnt I’m a lot more resilient and positive than I thought! I do always try to go through new things with a smile and not to expect to be perfect every time, but, even when I was getting eaten by a wave I was having the time of my life! It’s definitely taught me that it’s not too late to get into something new, and that there’s a lot of people who want to see you succeed. I learnt to remain grounded and not expect the whole ocean when you’ve barely paddled past the breakers. I guess you could take that as not to beat yourself up over something when you’ve only just started. There’s so much more to go!
What did you learn about mental health during the program?
How common it really is, and that you should be kind to others, because they really could be going through a battle you truly have no idea about. I learnt it’s okay to say if you’re having an off day, and it’s okay to recognise and accept your growth and your journey.
The WOW Program has been one of the biggest highlights of my year. No question. The fact you’re surrounded by people who are all feeling the same as you, just as nervous to try something new and different, and then have some incredible instructors, it’s one of the most supportive environments I’ve ever experienced.
