Sebastian Larkin (28) a Sales Rep and Medical Student from Newcastle has been volunteering as a surf mentor at our Nobbys, Newcastle location.

How did you first hear about WOW?

I have a friend that helps facilitate the program here in Newcastle, who is such a legend, and I was super excited to jump on board and get involved.

What motivated you to sign up for a WOW program?

I myself had a really tough run at the start of this year, lacking direction and having some big personal battles. I was searching for something to motivate me to work in a new positive direction, as well as something to show up for besides myself. Helping others always seems to help me as a healthy byproduct.

What surprised you most about a WOW program?

How much I learnt from the participants. Every new group we have come through, there are fresh ideas and nuggets of gold that I get to take home and use, continuing to build my understanding of mental health, and how to maintain my own.

What did you learn about yourself during the WOW programs?

I learned to take care of myself and my mental health. This program has perpetually reminded me of the importance of maintaining awareness of how I feel, gauging my participation with my own life, and health - both mental and physical.

What did you learn about mental health during the program?

That giving myself the time of day to focus on my mental health allows me to live a better, happier, more aware life.

I could not be more onboard with this program and its benefits which I continue to see group after group, as they learn new skills, make new friends and learn to surf. Being a part of that is a priceless experience for everyone involved!

We’re all about bringing the WOW factor to mental health, so keep an eye out for these magic case studies in the future as we dive deep into what makes people tick, and the essence of their experience with WOW. If you'd like to share your story, drop us a line!
